Zakat al-Fitr (Sadaqat al-Fitr) โ€“ Rulings & Wisdom

๐Ÿ“– Who Must Pay Zakat al-Fitr?

Any Muslim who possesses wealth equal to or exceeding the value of 52.5 tolas of silver (after deducting debts, basic necessities, and personal-use items) at the time of Fajr on the day of Eid al-Fitr is obligated to give charity known as Sadaqat al-Fitr (Zakat al-Fitr).

This ruling applies:

  • Whether the wealth is for trade or personal ownership
  • Whether one full year has passed or not

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿฆฐ Ruling for Women

Just as it is obligatory for men, it is also obligatory for women if they meet the Nisab (minimum wealth threshold):

  • If a woman owns jewelry (from parents, husband, or as Mahr) equal to or above the Nisab
  • Then she must pay her own Zakat al-Fitr

โœ” However, if the husband pays on her behalf with her permission, it will be valid.

โ— Important:

  • A wealthy woman is only responsible for her own Zakat al-Fitr
  • She is not responsible for:
    • Children
    • Parents
    • Husband

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Responsibility of a Man

A financially capable man must:

  • Pay his own Zakat al-Fitr
  • Pay on behalf of his minor children

โœ” If minor children are wealthy โ†’ pay from their wealth
โœ” If they are not wealthy โ†’ father pays from his own wealth

โ— For adult children:

  • It is not obligatory upon the father
  • However, if he pays with their permission, it is valid

โฐ Time of Obligation

Zakat al-Fitr becomes obligatory at Fajr on Eid day (end of Suhoor time).

โœ” It is permissible to pay during Ramadan
โœ” It is best (highly recommended) to pay before Eid prayer

โ— If delayed:

  • After Eid prayer โ†’ valid but reward decreases
  • Delaying beyond Eid day โ†’ disliked (Makruh), yet still obligatory
